The Difference Between Hard Front Wigs and Lace Front Wigs

When starting your wig journey, the first thing you will probably come across is hard front wigs and lace front wigs.

Buying a wig is a financial investment, but it is also an investment in yourself. And different wigs have different qualities and uses. Whether you decide to buy hard front wigs or lace front wigs, you first need to understand the difference between them to help you make the right choice.

Lace Front Wigs

Most wig caps are basically the same design, but lace front wigs, in particular, have taken over the market in the last decade because of their incredible hairlines.

Lace comes in various densities and skin tones, sometimes without customization, and lace front wigs can be attached with long-term glue, taped on with wig tape, or there are glue-free varieties that fit tightly to your head. On a lace front wig, human or synthetic hair is intricately knotted or tied, one to three to five hairs at a time into a nearly invisible lace that makes the material look much like hair emerging from the scalp.

Lace fronts are popular because they look so realistic, but depending on a few factors, there may be a downside that you have to watch out for. When cutting lace close to your natural hairline, depending on the strength and sturdiness of the lace, application, and removal can damage the lace over time if you decide to use glue or tape.

To fix it, you may need a professional, or you can replace the unit entirely. Since lace front wigs are very popular and affordable, this may not be a long-term problem.

You may choose to wear your lace front wig with a longer adhesive. Keep in mind that wigs need to be cared for just like human hair, although the process is slightly different. A solid overnight routine for long-term wear can make a big difference, but to get the absolute maximum life out of your wig, it is best to mount it overnight on a foam or canvas block.

Simply put, lace front wigs sound exactly the same as they do. A wig with a lace front blends more realistically into your hairline and scalp, especially if you want a bangs-free look. In fact, most people can’t even tell that you’re wearing a lace front wig, which is usually the desired look. You can also style a lace front wig just like you would a real hair, and many consumers say that lace front wigs are more comfortable between the two types.

Hard Front Wigs

A hard front wig just means there may be no ventilation for the hair. For any hairstyle with bangs (short, long, side parting), there is no need for a lace front wig at all, as the front of the wig is covered with hair. For a hard front wig, if you have proper placement, it is likely that you do not need any kind of adhesive. For this reason, and simply because the material is more durable, hard front wigs last much longer than lace front wigs, although you may not achieve a natural look, depending on the styling. A few simple modifications to a hard front wig can make a huge difference, such as using a thin cut in the front as needed.

Hard front wigs have a shorter application time, allowing the wearer to wear them as soon as you purchase a regular wig. The biggest advantage of hard front wigs is that you may look like you have a full, thick head of hair, which some customers love. However, others don’t believe that hard front wigs look less realistic because they don’t offer the much-needed realism of a lace front.

Price

Lace front wigs are more expensive than hard front wigs, so most consumers tend to buy regular wigs more often. Most stores have a wider variety of hard-front wigs. However, just because hard front wigs are the cheapest and most readily available, does not mean that they will be what you are looking for in terms of style and natural look. It is important to consider the wig you want based on your own situation.
