Cold chill winds, snowfall, freezing rains are at their peak nowadays. There is fun enjoying all the chill outside, but this icy weather challenges our skin and hair. Even our dear wigs are not immune to damage in winters. However synthetic hair wigs behave better than human hair, still, they need some love and care in a cold environment.

There is no sweating in winters and they don’t get frizzy, dry as real hairs, but a little effort is required to keep them fresh and good looking. Let's have some discussion on how can you keep them in the Tip-Top position during winter days.

wigs

Clean them regularly

In summers, sweat is one reason that makes us wash synthetic hair wigs after a few wears. Winter is sweat-free, it doesn’t mean stop washing wigs. In winters we spent more time indoors, with more exposure to smoke from fireplaces, cigarettes, etc. The smoke resides easily on synthetic strands so a cleansing routine becomes a must.

Wash them as you did in the summers. With synthetic hair shampoo after every 10-15 wear,s, depending on how much they are exposed to dirt and smoke. Preferably use a moisturizing shampoo to keep them moist and hydrated. They are not real hair, of course, they still require moisture to stay manageable.

Wig Conditioning

Wigs tend to dry out in winters as there is no moisture in the winter air, indoor heating systems make indoor air dry too. You can not cut on wig conditioning during winters instead it becomes even more essential in this season.

Apply a deep conditioner after every wash. It will help prevent dryness, frizziness, and breakage. Furthermore, the hair will remain soft, docile, and, well-textured in dry air.

A very useful tip is to apply a leave-in-conditioner designed for synthetic hair wigs. spray it on at least once a  week during winters to avoid static electricity and frizz. It will retain the wig’s healthier, moist, shinier look.

Air Dry

Once they are washed it’s imperative to dry them completely. Avoid heating tools as much as possible. Always air dry them to increase their lifespan.

  •         Wash the wig when you have enough time to dry it in the air.
  •         After washing and conditioning, don’t wring or squeeze wigs.
  •         Lay down the wig on a towel and pat dry.
  •         Place the wig on a wig stand. Detangle hair with finger combing. And leave it there for drying.

Air drying is the key to keeping synthetic hair wings in excellent condition and shape for a long time.

Dry it completely before going out

Since it's winter you may be tempted to hurriedly wear the wig after washing, as it‘ll take time to dry out. Remember cold temperatures freeze hair wigs faster than natural hair. If the wig is even a little bit damp it will freeze when you step out

Wearing a damp wig run risk of getting sick.  Wet frozen hair clings to the back of the head and can cause sneezing, cold, and sniffles. Frozen wig hair becomes brittle and breaks easily. Make sure to wear a completely dry wig to avoid discomfort in the long run.

Keep it safe from rain or environmental moisture

Save wigs from rain and snow exposure. Cover up and protect your wig in rain and snowfall when you are outside. Even drizzling can damage wig hair.

If the wig gets wet under rain or due to snow, allow it air dry. It will help fibers to stay in good condition.

Cover your hair

Moisturizing doesn’t promise the wig will not dry out. Cover synthetic wig when you are going to spend a substantial amount of hours outdoors. Use some fashionable accessorized loose hats, or soft, colorful scarfs to wrap around them. They will not only keep the moisture in, but they will also keep you warm and cozy.

Wearing a hat or not on a wig is another debate. Some pro tips are

  •         A tight hat can cause hair breakage. Wear a loose hat on the wig. Choose a hat a size bigger than your head so that you can move it back and forth without creating friction.
  •         Pick a hat made of soft material like faux fur, or cotton.
  •         Wrap your wig hair in a soft satin scarf when going out.
  •         Also, wrap it around hair when the wig is off at night. It will save the wig from drying in dry indoor air.

Avoid heating tools

Heating tools are neither good for real hair nor synthetic hair wigs. Many good-quality artificial hair wigs are heatproof but excessive use of heated tools can destroy them soon.

Dry air inside and outdoor is enough to damage hair, don’t overdo heating by unnecessarily using hot irons, blow dryers, and hot curlers.

  •         As mentioned earlier instead of using a hairdryer, air-dry synthetic hair wigs.
  •         Limit and minimize the use of heating tools,
  •         Choose some hairstyles that need minimum use of heating tools.
  •         Only wash your wigs when you have time to air dry them.

Comb wig hair

Winter winds are stronger and synthetic hair tends to tangle sooner than your real hair. Unfortunately, tangles take no time to turn into knots, especially when you are wearing coats, woolen clothes, and clothes with rough textures.

Tangles and knots can lead to hair breakage and frizz. In winters always keep a wig hair comb, (a Wide-tooth comb) with you. Keep combing hair whenever you get a chance, during the day.

Detangle wig hair at night

Every night when the wig is off. Detangling is very very important to keep the synthetic wig in good-looking condition

  •         Place it on a wig stand.
  •         Brush through the entire hair until no tangle is left.
  •         Brush from the ends towards the top slowly and gently.
  •         Do not tug or pull hair, stay gentle and remove one tangle/knot at one time. It will take a few minutes but save your wig’s life.
  •         Wrap it with a scarf or plastic sheet.
